Lighting Maintenance and Lighting Retrofit (common terms). Ballast a. Also called ballast resistor. a device, often a resistor, that maintains the current in a circuit at a constant value by varying its resistance in order to counteract changes in voltage. Magnetic Ballast: One of the earliest types of fluorescent lamp ballasts. Typically used to power and regulate a fluorescent lamp. Ex. F96T12CW/HO, F64T6CW, and FC12T9CW. Wired in series. Will power up to 2 fluorescent lamps. Variations:may include a starter, or igniter, also refered to as: electromagnetic ballast. Notes: Along with T12 fluorescent lamp technology, the magnetic ballast is considered inefficient by todays standards. Advances in electronic ballast will make magnetic ballasts obsolete.
